Eating in the Light of the Moon: How Women Can Transform Their Relationship with Food Through Myths, Metaphors, and Storytelling

Eating in the Light of the Moon: How Women Can Transform Their Relationship with Food Through Myths, Metaphors, and Storytelling

Reading this book is an enlightening experience! Weaving a rich tapestry of multicultural myths, ancient legends, and simple folktales, Anita Johnston teaches women how to free themselves from disordered eating by discovering the metaphors that are hidden in their own life stories. “Storytellers speak in the language of myth and metaphor,” Johnston explains. “They tell us a truth that is not literal, but symbolic. If we hear the stories with only the outer ear, they can seem absurd and untrue, but when listened to with the inner ear, they convey a truth that can be understood and absorbed on a deeply personal level. In this way, stories help us connect with our inner world, to the natural rhythms and cycles of the earth, and to the power of our intuitive wisdom.” In addition to being immensely enjoyable reading, Eating in the Light of the Moon is filled with practical exercises and profound insights. Twenty chapters explore different themes of self-discovery and empowerment on core issues such as:

Intuition: The Inner Seeing, Hearing, Knowing

Symbolism: Hunger as a Metaphor

Feelings: Gifts from the Heart

Moontime: Reclaiming the Body’s Wisdom

Dreamtime: The Journey Within

Sexuality: Embracing the Feminine

Recovery: Out of the Labyrinth

User Ratings and Reviews

5 Stars The ONLY book that has ever WORKED for me!!!
I have struggled with disordered eating ever since adolescence - but have FINALLY overcome it thanks to this book. Off and on for years, I would manage to take off excess weight, but only maintain that healthy weight for a brief time before gaining it all back (plus a little more). Since reading this book, I have finally managed to stop my emotional eating, and instead eat for enjoyment and sustenance. I am finally a happy, healthy, WHOLE, and fulfilled person. Thank you Dr. Johnston!

5 Stars Very uplifting and inspiring
I purchased this book based on the high reviews it was given, because the description is not what I typically seek when looking for help with eating. However, I am so glad I did. This book is truly nurturing and helps us remember to honor ourselves and being feminine. I was also dealing with other insecurities that this book helped with such as body image and relationships. Very interesting and entertaining as well! I wish there were more books written by Anita Johnston!

5 Stars Eating in the Light of the Moon: How Women Can Transform Their Relationship with Food Through Myths, Metaphors, and Storytelling
This is a sensitive and insightful book for woman who have struggled with their body image or their relationship with food and eating.

Not too technical or theraputic, it uses stories to demonstrate the issues women face in our culture that promote a false sense of what it is to be feminine and attractive.

I would also recommend it for men with a daughter or sister that have struggled with issues of diet, weight and body image.

5 Stars the best
The best book written on this subject. The author uses a different approach than other books I have read and the fables make the book a more interesting read. Very much recommended.

5 Stars Great
I’m really enjoying this book!

I’ve read many books on this topic. I especially enjoyed the language she uses, and her perspective on sexuality, patriarchy and the characteristics of ED’s.

I like the emphasis on self-acceptance.
